Horticulture sector is moving at a fast pace owing to its immense potential in improving nutrition and well-being, raising farm income, generating employment opportunities and earning foreign exchange. Horticulture is also recognized as a major driver of growth in agriculture in India. It contributes nearly 30 per cent of the gross domestic product (GDP) of agriculture.  The area and production of horticulture crops in India are increasing rapidly and presently it covers 28.08 million ha with annual production of 342.3 million tonnes. Keeping with emerging demands, rapid technological advancement in different areas viz. Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Big Data, Next Generation Sequencing and Genome Editing created new avenues for precise cultivation and designing of new crop varieties in horticulture. To discuss the recent advancements and define the future course of actions, the Academy is organising horticulture congress biennially since 2004 and 9 such congresses were organised in different parts of the country. It is proposed to organize the 10th Indian Horticulture Congress-2023 at Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat, Assam from November 6-9, 2023. Special emphasis will be given to the potential of the North-East India as a hub for horticultural production and export. The congress aims to identify such issues, set priorities to unleash the potential of this sector in attaining self-reliance. Based on these, thirteen major theme areas have been identified with important topics requiring deliberations.
